You’ll be inspired by the beautiful surroundings in Victoria, British Columbia. In this 4-day, nature-inspired workshop, you’ll learn monotype printing techniques using leaves and other natural objects with R&F oil pigment sticks. You’ll be working on reusable gel printing plates that are easy to use and the images can be added as collage in your encaustic paintings. This method is the most painterly of printmaking techniques and without a press.
Taking photos as reference material from our inspiring location, you’ll learn the exciting ways to paint with wax! We’ll cover several techniques for collaging and embedding your prints into encaustic, as well as image transfer. We’ll include a variety of techniques such as incising, scraping and adding texture. These combined techniques will allow you to create dynamic nature-based compositions full of depth and translucency. You'll also learn how to use plant material as a stencil to create textured botanical paintings.
A Pigment Stick demonstration offers a relaxed environment where participants can see and experience Pigment Sticks. Topics covered include: how R&F Pigment Sticks allow artists to explore traditional and alternative methods of painting with oil by allowing them to draw or paint directly onto a surface with immediacy and fluidity; what Pigment Sticks are; health and safety when working with Pigment Sticks (including proper disposal of oil-soaked rags and paper towels); appropriate supports and tools; transparent vs. opaque Pigment Sticks; building a surface, monoprinting, image transfer, and mark making; and additional techniques (the use of cold wax, Gelli plates, etc.).
The drawn line is the structure upon which a painting is built
A simple line can say so much. A line can be bold, expressive, graphic, or delicate, the list is long. There is however nothing more beautiful or unique than the hand drawn line, as a hand drawn line expresses ones individual style.
This technique based workshop explores the importance of the drawn line and ways that one can utilize it to give new depth and focus to their work.
Through mark making, we will experiment with various methods of drawing in, under and on the wax surface. Develop ways to continuously pull lines, visually up through the surface of the encaustic painting, while exploring a variety of arts media to make marks and draw. Thus coming away with a better understanding of what media to use and when. experimenting with techniques to bring finer detail in to ones encaustic painting.
Among the oldest forms of painting, encaustics holds a myriad of possibilities to the modern artist. Encaustics have a beautiful otherworldly depth and a tactile, sumptuous surface. The encaustic painting can be as smooth as glass or it can be built up, scraped back, drawn on and carved into. The combinations are endless.
Take your encaustic practice to the next level during this in-depth 2-day workshop will include a discussion regarding various approaches to working in encaustic followed by a brief overview of studio set-up and safety. We will then dive into substrate and surface prep; ways of using the heated palette for mixing and blending colours; working with encaustic paint to create both visual and physical texture while experimenting with various mark making media; finishing our pieces by finessing colours and texture using R&F Pigment sticks. Some of the techniques covered include mastering brush work, smooth colour transitions, glazing, creating depth and dimension, controlling texture and smooth luminous surfaces. Encaustics encourages everyone to explore and experiment, to find their own unique voice.

Encaustic is an amazingly durable art form that has been in use for centuries. Encaustic Painting involves using wax medium to which colour pigments have been added, then heated on an encaustic palette and applied to a rigid substrate however, its application goes far beyond that.
We hope you can join Megan Mac Donald as she gives us an demonstration and overview of encaustic painting.
